From Hostice to Graz and back.
Members of a Hungarian minority of Roma in Slovakia travel this distance at regular intervals.
They leave their village and their families and travel to Graz, by car or by train.
They earn money which they need desperately.
The privileged among them work in Mac-jobs, the others beg.
A Catholic house offers them lodging.
They get a bed, breakfast and dinner.
From 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. they have to stay outside, on the street.
We set out on the same journey.
We use the same streets and stop at the same places.
We try to take pictures along the roads, at rest stations, on parking lots, in the refugee sleeping halls in Graz.
The images that emerge are ours – without judgement.
It’s a visual record of the trip the Roma do every other week.
To get from one place to the other.
579 kilometres, 6 hours and 19 minutes.
